For Newborn Session Information and helpful tips, please read over all of the below information.
Maternity sessions are best done 4-6 weeks before due dat.
Newborn sessions MUST be done within the first 14 days of life. We’ll be moving them around and scrunching them into those sweet sleepy newborn poses, so we want to make sure they’re sleepy enough to allow us to handle them. After day 14 they don’t sleep as well or as much, colic can begin, they love to stretch out, are more alert to their surroundings, and more of a chance for baby acne.
All newborn sessions are done on weekdays only and we book up fairly quickly and only take a limited number of newborn sessions a week to allow room for adjusting as babies are born, to ensure a session around your due date we recommend booking within your second trimester. To book it please click the button below and book a week day within 2-3 days of your due date. If no open date around that time frame please contact us to discuss options. Finally, once baby arrives please contact us within the first 24 hours to finalize a session date at 832-296-5213.
-Babies tend to wake up and get fussy when clothes are being taken off so please bring baby in a diaper and hat only. Keep baby warm in the car seat with blankets. Placing a receiving blanket in the car seat before placing baby in it will keep babies skin from touching that cold scratchy car seat.
-You will need enough milk (boob or formula), diapers & wipes (lots of wipes) to last 3-4 hours.
-If breast feeding, I ask no spicy foods within 24 hours before session
-If pumping, bringing your pump is recommended.
-If breast feeding, if possible please have a pumped bottle of milk OR a formula bottle, in case baby wakes during session and needs a quick top off. We ask this because in those early days, nursing can take 30-45 minutes and a bottle goes much faster.
-Please do not plan “outfits” for your baby, newborn sessions are mostly done “in the buff”, in specially made newborn outfits that I have or in wraps. I have many props, baskets, bowls, blankets, wraps, headbands, hats, etc.
-Please provide a pacifier. Even if you do not want your baby taking a pacifier long term, we only use it in must needed situations. So there is no need to worry baby will become dependent on it.
-A few extra ideas could be ... mom and dad’s wedding rings and/or college rings fun personal items that represent a hobby, favorite sports team, college, family heirlooms (as long as not to large).
-Keep baby mittens on your baby as much as possible in the days/hours leading up to your session. This helps prevent face scratches.
-Most of the poses work best if the baby is in a deep sleep. To encourage this, we recommend that you do whatever it takes to make sure baby is exhausted. I realize that keeping your little one awake on top of your own sleep deprivation might feel like torture, but we think it will be worth it in the end!
-Please arrive with baby hungry and feed baby once you arrive at studio.
-Our sessions tend to make babies hungrier than normal, in which may make them eat more often than they normally would, so please don't forget extra milk or formula in a bottle if possible.
-If you are pumping, I recommend you bring you pump just incase.
-Please do not bring extra people to the session. There is no need for extra unnecessary people to come "to help" during session. The only adults that should be there are mom & dad or a driver in place of dad if mom needs a driver. We need a peaceful environment for best results.
-Plan on session taking 2-4 hours depending on how baby does. We like to leave plenty of time for extra feedings, diaper changes and bouts of crankiness. PLEASE FULLY PREPARE DAD'S OF THIS IF THEY ARE COMING (they are often shocked). :O)
-Location is kept at a balmy 80 degrees and since baby is typically naked we use a space heater close to baby to keep them warm and happy and sleepy so be prepared to be warm as well.
Preparing for Parents included session
For any parents being photographed we recommend dark jeans and long sleeve black, white, or cream tops. For moms, we suggest cotton knit camis and knit tops. Mom’s can also bring a cream tank for some sweet skin-on-skin poses and communicate with dads before hand about his desires to take a few "shirtless dad" shots. No fancy jewelry or prints. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Mom’s and Dad’s hands will be shown in the close up photographs. Please make sure your nails look nice! Think organic and natural. Mom's look best with lose soft curls and hair down. Please no jewelry (other than wedding ring)
Preparation for siblings included in session
Honestly, if chosen, the most stressful part of newborn shoots can be the family/sibling portion. Siblings….well….they can bring a lot of joy, love and sweet kisses. But they can also bring stress to a newborn shoot. Especially, unpredictable toddlers whose world has just been turned upside down by a new baby. There is no way, no matter how well behaved your child is, that your child will be happy and good for 2-4 hours as we focus on the newborn portion of the session. Therefore I require that if siblings are included, they be done at the beginning of the session and then leave for the remainder, it truly is a must for everyone’s sanity. One idea that seems to help get younger siblings to cooperate during their portion of the session is a reward. Provide items such as stickers, candy or fruit snacks to reward for each “gentle kiss to baby’s head” or “sit still and hold baby”, etc. Clothing for siblings….light colored clothing. White or CREAMS Many times boys will go in jeans and no top and girls light colored dresses and for laying down shots I can the top half in a soft pretty wrap. Again...think organic and naturals.
Sit back and relax
As a mother, your smell and voice is so recognizable to your baby, that I tend to take on full care of your baby unless baby needs to eat or momma snuggles. This helps to ensure a sleepy baby instead of a baby looking for their food. So, sit down, I’ve got this. I’ve had many moms and dad’s, who are also sleep deprived, take full advantage of this and take a little nap in the parent waiting area, knowing their little one will be very well cared for. :o) No matter what your baby does, please know that I am always relaxed. I do this all the time and have seen everything. I don’t want you stressed if the baby starts to cry, poop/pee/spit-up on me or props. (as they usually do) The length of time all depends on baby’s mood and willingness to sleep. Unfortunately…this isn’t something we can predict! I ask everyone to remain as calm as possible, if you stress or get frustrated baby will feel this and react in the same manor. SO SIT BACK, RELAX AND ENJOY!
